Viagra or medically known as Sildenafil citrate is a drug used to treat male erectile dysfunction.  Since the drug was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration FDA in 1998, the patent holder Pfizer has made a fortune by selling over $500 billion  each year.  Viagra is also know as “Vitamin V”, or the “Blue Pill”.

The primary prescription use of Viagra is the treatment of erectile dysfunction (described as inability of sustaining a satisfactory erection to complete intercourse.)

The popularity of Viagra let women wanting a version of magic pills to solve their own problems, low libido or loss of interest, desire in sex or orgasm.  According to statistics, about 43% of women suffer from some kind of sexual dysfunction. 

However in 2004, Pfizer Inc, the maker of Viagra pills announced that they abandoned over 8 years of research on “female Viagra”.  So in short the Female Viagra doesn’t exist, yet!

However the potential profitability of the female sexual enhancement drugs has attracted many pharmaceutical companies and medical labs into the business. They have launched numerous products, some are still in the lab, whether you can call them “Female Viagra” is purely a subjective matter.  The popularity of Viagra has made it a generic term for sexual enhancement substance.

A company called Boehringer Ingelheim is behind Filbanserin.   Boehringer Ingelheim  is about to launch its version of Viagra for women next year in United Kingdom first.

LibiGel (gel, not pill)  For treatment of lack of sexual desire, low libido

Currently in clinical trial in Charlotte, USA.  The maker is BioSante Pharmaceuticals.

There are also some sub-market product which most likely are not regulated by FDA, no prescriptions are needed for these drugs,  but the effectiveness can not be proven.  So do your own research with caution before purchase.
